I can’t think of a better way to begin chronicling this food journey than by highlighting one of my hometown hangouts (a nicely alliterative way of saying, “Favorite Places in Athens”). Ike & Jane is a wonderful little cafe/bakery serving up some great breakfast sandwiches, baked goods, donuts, and lunch fare. Their donuts are delicious. Blueberry and Red Velvet are the everyday faves of loyal Ike & Jane customers. If you have never experienced an Ike & Jane donut, let me tell you: “EAT ONE!” You will be surprised by the freshness and flavor. In fact, it might ruin other donuts for you! In addition to the aforementioned favorites, Ike and Jane also churns out seasonal specialties (like the pumpkin spice donut pictured below), novelty donuts (think bacon and peanut butter), and a wide variety of gourmet donuts topped with everything from Nutella to lucky charms. I cannot recommend their donuts enough.
Another Ike & Jane favorite of mine is the Roast Beef and White Cheddar Sandwich. This sandwich comes on a cracked black pepper baguette and is topped of with some amazing horseradish mayonnaise. With your sandwich, you can select kettle chips, fresh fruit, or greens in a homemade vinaigrette (or add another side for $1). For more of the lunch items check out the menu on the Ike & Jane website. Better yet, drop into Ike & Jane if only to grab a donut. Not only do I love the food here, but also I love the atmosphere and the welcoming spirit of the proprietors. After a year away from Athens, I was still remembered by name! I cannot tell you how cool that was! (Scroll through the pictures to see my ratings and recommendations.)
